Project 1 Information
The first project asks you to find and summarize a professional journal article related to a challenging algebra topic. Here are some topics (chosen by Dr. Tintera’s class) to get you thinking.
- The conceptual meaning of slope
- Technical vocabulary in Algebra I
- Manipulating symbols in algebraic equations
- The meaning of function
- Multiple representations of equations, tables, and graphs
- Arithmetic operations on fractions
- Building rules to describe patterns
- Extended problem-solving tasks
- Factoring quadratic expressions
- Using and interpreting slope in context
- Seven components of number sense
- Habits of mind that support algebraic reasoning
- Slope and linear equations in two variables
One of the goals of the project is for you to find the professional article on your own. I encourage you to use the library or one of the following NCTM journals.
- NCTM Journal Search
- Teaching Children Mathematics (elementary focus)
- Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School
- Mathematics Teacher (secondary focus)
- On-Math (online focus)
- Other search resources
Project 2 Information
For ideas on the second project, I suggest looking through the inquiry-based activities you encounter in the class, as well as the NCTM Illuminations site or the textbooks for the class.
