Student-Directed Lawsuits

Students can fight the destruction of higher education from the massive grade inflation in the U.S. by bringing lawsuits against universities and colleges. Find areas where there are outside examinations that must be passed by students. If they receive A’s and B’s, but cannot pass the outside exams, a cause of action in the courtroom may be possible. For example, many accounting students sit for a national CPA exam, and there is an auditing portion on this exam. If a student makes A’s or B’s on his/her auditing classes and fails the auditing section of the CPA exam, there is a direct connecting line to the faculty member(s) teaching the auditing courses. Students will need to sue for the education they are not receiving. In accounting, there are other outside exams (i.e., CMA, CIA). Use this as a sample advertising handout, overhead, or bulletin board brochure. Please copy this piece, give to other faculty members, and post it at your university. Consider developing other handouts for students to create class action suits.

Notice: Auditing Students

If you make an A or B on your auditing courses, but fail the auditing portion of the CPA examination, you may have a cause of action against the university. Please e-mail me at dcrumbl@lsu.edu to join a class action suit against the massive grade inflation at your university.

Heather May, "Ex-Students Sue Universities Over Quality of Education," The Chronicle of Higher Education, August 16, 1996, p. A29.

Ex-Student James M. Houston sues Northern Arizona University after receiving a Ph.D. with distinction in educational leadership. "He says he's a fraud. His education was so poor, he says that he doesn't deserve a degree." And he is suing NAU in a state court for $1 million in punitive damages. Dr. Houston says the faculty has a diploma mill mindset and poor teaching skills. He hardly studied, spent little time on his class work, but still managed to earn a 4.0 grade-point average.
