Applying for Career Betterment: Recognizing and Implementing Strategies

Objective:

To further career goals by learning to recognize and implement writing strategies in order to gain a new position.

Assignment:

You have four options to choose from based on where you are in your career path. Further details about each choice are listed below. Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that this project is to be focused on the here and now, not a projection into the future.

Options:

• Applying for a Job
• Applying for Graduate School
• Applying for Law School
• Applying for an Internship

Turning in the Portfolio:

Place resume/cover letter (or the equivalents from other options) in the left-hand pocket of the portfolio. Place all other materials, in the order listed under "requirements" on the assignment page, in the right-hand pocket.

Introduction Memorandum: Demonstrates ability to analyze one’s own work, to explain process and evaluate the success of the documents (10)
Strategy Memorandum: Demonstrates careful and thorough planning. Gives details about several key decisions that had to be made for P2 materials and outlines rationale for making these decisions (10)
Resume/Curriculum Vita: Meets general expectations for resumes in design and content. Written and arranged to highlight strengths and requirements for job (35)
Cover Letter/Personal Statement: Directed specifically to the job/internship/school applied for. Is reader-oriented and explains qualifications beyond the resume (35)
Research Information: Contains at least one example from each of the three required categories (see assignment descriptions (10)
