Objectives
- To use multiple sources to find information about jobs in your career area
- To become familiar with different types of resumes
- To become more aware of audience needs
- To analyze design and layout elements
- To practice communicating in a variety of ways with a variety of audiences
- To understand audience expectations within a writing community
- To present information in a concise manner in a professional format
Job Information Documents
Using multiple sources, such as Career Services, monster.com, newspapers,
human resources personnel, etc, find three (3) job postings that you could legimately
apply to in the next six months to a year.
Once you have found the postings, research information about the jobs and how
to write effective cover letters & resumes for those jobs. Look at: 1) specific
company information, 2) websites with sample resumes/CLs for that career, and
3) general information about expectations for working in that career field.
Find at least three (3) sources, at least one from each category. Note: the
bare minimum is three. Anyone serious about finding a job will do much more
in-depth research.
Strategy Memorandum
Write a memo in which you explain in detail how you will prepare the documents.
Include the following:
- Analyze the audience for your resume & cover letter
- Description of the choices and decisions you made to construct the resume
- Description of the strategy used to write the cover letter
- Discuss how you will use the research you did on the company and the career
Resume
- Select the job that most interests you from your research
- Create a print resume that you would use to apply for that job
- Create an easily scanned or on-line version of your resume
Cover Letter
Write a cover letter to accompany and complement your resume.
Follow-Up (Optional, but highly recommended)
- Post your resume with Monster Board.com (Once you have your resume written,
you will have the information you need to perform the task)
- Post your resume with Career Services (This will make your information available
for on-campus interviews, full-time job referrals, and internships)
